Let Me Go An Archie Sheridan / Gretchen Lowell Novel Chelsea Cain Books
Archie Sheridan is a troubled homicide detective in Portland, Oregon. He's obsessed with serial killer Gretchen Lowell, who once held and tortured him, but who also excites him like no one else. In past books Gretchen, dubbed the Beauty Killer by the press, has been captured but has escaped, and is currently at large as the novel opens on the death of a DEA agent, putting a long-term undercover investigation at risk. Archie wants to warn a friend of his that he's in danger when evidence turns up that Gretchen has contacted Archie.I really enjoy this series. Archie is a great protagonist and other characters, like his partner and reporter Susan Ward, are quite well fleshed out and interesting. Author Cain also brings charming Portland to life (though oddly I don't think she's ever had a scene in the iconic and labyrinthine Powell's Books).
I agree with other reviewers that something is needed to inject vitality into the Archie-Gretchen dynamic, though. Archie is just too smart and empathetic to be led around by Gretchen so completely. Something needs to happen. OR we need to get into Gretchen's frightening head a bit more. How/why did she become a killer, for instance? Why does she keep sparing Archie?
I think this book has been the weakest of the five, but it was still eminently readable, and I look forward to another. Cain's writing and descriptions of both people and the city elevate a less-than-flawless entry in the series.
In order the books are: Heartsick, Sweetheart, Kill You Twice, The Night Season and Let Me Go. An excellent series, though quite gory. Not for the faint of heart.

Let Me Go An Archie Sheridan / Gretchen Lowell Novel Chelsea Cain Books Reviews
This is not a book for the faint hearted. If fairly graphic descriptions of blood and gore make you queasy, take this book out of your shopping cart. For the others, it’s a tense read. But a happy ending once you’ve slogged through it.
4.5 stars. An excellent entry in the Archie Sheridan/Gretchen Lowell series, which if you haven't been reading it, is about the cat and mouse game between homicide detective Archie Sheridan and Gretchen Lowell, the beautiful serial killer who seduced him before nearly killing him.
Even though this is book six in the series, Chelsea Cain manages to spring some good surprises in this book, and both Archie and Susan (the leads), show some substantial emotional growth by the end. Even horrible, ruthless Gretchen shows a bit of mercy toward Archie and Susan, and yet, it's with the sense that it's only because Gretchen doesn't want to lose her favorite playthings. Will Gretchen leave them alone? Don't count on it.
Recommended if you love gritty, intelligent, well-written serial killer books; be aware that Cain doesn't spare you the gore.
Chelsea Cain's previous five books has put her into my top 5 favorite authors. The Archie/Gretchen (with Susan) trio has been intriguing and entertaining. I haven't ranked my perps but she is probably easily in my top 3 as I look back on them. I enjoyed book five, KILL YOU TWICE, very much so I was hoping for another excellent page turner.
This book, for me, slipped a bit in overall plot enjoyment. I was a little slow in the beginning but picked up very quickly and was a real page turner for a good portion but then shifted to something that felt like I was walking along a haunted trail with a haunted mansion, scary rooms, and a cast of characters that didn't jolt me. The interaction of the main trio has always been the highlight of her books and I enjoyed the degree of it in this book.
The author has a challenge to keep a quality perp on the run and/or active for a series. I think she has done a good job at it up to this point. I would like to be challenged more with the mystery with more shocking twists that fool me as a reader.
Any new reader should read this series in order that starts with HEARTSICK.
No doubt, still a Chelsea Cain fan and can't wait for book #7!
"Happy Halloween, darling."
Archie Sheridan can't catch a break. The sixth installment opens to Archie celebrating his 42nd birthday with his family. It seems he has regained some semblance of a normal life, despite the infamous Gretchen Lowell still on the run from a state mental hospital. Sadly, Gretchen doesn't make much of an appearance in the first third of the book, other then flashback memories in Archie's tortured mind.
Archie begins investigating the powerful Reynolds family, assisting Leo whilst he works undercover for the DEA. Unfortunately, this storyline isn't as interesting as it sounds. There's a lot of posturing and talk of corruption, and the plot is dragged out way too much. For the first time ever, I found Archie actually a little boring. Without his pill addiction or obsession over Gretchen, he sleeps and eats like a regular person. Even his relationship with Rachel is progressing at a normal, boring rate. And just when you thought all hope was lost... Gretchen is back. Well, it is Archie's birthday after all. She wouldn't miss it for the world. And boy, does she give him a birthday present he won't forget in a hurry.
With Gretchen back in town, the man-hunt is back on and the story really starts to heat up. Susan Ward, the lovable ex-reporter, now sporting jet-black hair with a very Cruella De Vil white stripe, becomes embroiled in Leo's investigation, and inadvertently puts her life on the line. Archie's attempts to save her threatens his own life, and when you throw Gretchen into the mix, the body count sky rockets. Can he catch her once and for all, or can Gretchen finally let him go?
This sixth book slowly veers off course for a while, straightening out towards the end. With Cain;s next book a stand-alone unrelated to this series, the only consultation we have until the next book is that Gretchen is still out there. Watching. Waiting.
